Sunflower

In botany, the sunflower (Helianthus) is also known as the mock flower. It belongs to the composite family and is an annual herbaceous plant. It sows itself so that it will flower again the following year.

It puts a smile on your face and that's only because of its vibrant yellow-orange colour.

It is also a paradise for insects and birds. Bees and bumblebees can often be seen on the flowers.

Delphinium

Delphiniums are buttercups, so they are related to the well-known yellow buttercup, for example. The name delphinium, which is the same for both genera, is derived from the shape of the rearmost petal, which ends in an elongated spur. It can grow between 120 cm and 180 cm tall.

It is available in the flower colours white, yellow, light blue, medium blue, dark blue, pink and sometimes also bicoloured.

Bees and bumblebees particularly enjoy the non-double varieties.

Cornflower

The cornflower is a striking summer flower with a fantastic long-distance effect and this is only due to its beautiful blue colouring.

In floristry, they are often used for bouquets, Biedermeier bouquets, hair wreaths and more.

Due to the fact that the flower is edible, it can be used in a salad. However, it only has a slightly spicy flavour and tastes slightly bitter.

The decorative cornflower can no longer simply be plucked from the edges of a cornfield. It is a protected species because the use of pesticides in agriculture has increased in recent decades.

Gladiolus

Gladioli are a real eye-catcher in summer and come in the most unusual colours.

There are gladiolus varieties in almost every flower colour from white to green and yellow, orange, red, purple, smoky grey and brown. They can reach a height of between 80 and 150 cm.

For a particularly long vase life, the gladiolus should be re-cut every few days. It is important to cut them straight and not at an angle, as you might think, as this would cause them to fade more quickly.

Poppies

In summer, the poppy with its different species and varieties delights with its delicate flowers.

The active ingredients contained in some poppy varieties are used in medicine. This means it can be used in many different ways. However, the white or yellow latex it contains is poisonous.

It comes in the colours: deep red, orange-red, violet or pink and white.

The poppy also attracts numerous insects, especially bees.
